The City of New Britain issues a statement that says its former Mayor, Erin Stewart, has missed the September 1 repayment date to reimburse the City for money a report says she spent on personal expenses.
The City has not received any payment from former Mayor Erin Stewart toward the funds owed to the City, nor has the City been contacted by former Mayor Stewart or any representative acting on her behalf regarding the missed deadlines.
The City has provided sufficient time and opportunity for restitution to be made. At this point, the City will avail itself of all appropriate legal remedies and take the steps necessary to recover the funds owed on behalf of New Britain taxpayers.
We continue to work with counsel on this matter and will not speculate publicly about specific legal actions or strategy. While there is no specific timeline for additional updates, we recognize the public interest in this matter and will provide further information when there is a substantive development and it is appropriate to do so.
The City established a series of dates over the summer of this year for Stewart to repay over $240,000 worth of municipal funds that were allegedly spent on personal items, as uncovered by a report the City commissioner at the beginning of this year, shortly after Stewart left office.
Stewart ultimately suspended her campaign for Governor when the report went public, shortly before the 2026 Republican Convention.
