NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTIC Radio)—With the city of New Haven well within the red zone, officials plan to begin implementing fines for those who are violating COVID-19 regulations.

Per the governor's executive order, city officials intend to impose a $100 fine on a business if an employee is not wearing a face mask while at work and a $500 fine for anyone that violates a gathering size limit.

In a virtual press conference Tuesday, New Haven Mayor Justin Elicker said, "We've seen a number of businesses be laxed about either the number of people gathering within that business that are beyond the levels allowed right now or employees that are not wearing masks. We want businesses to take this very seriously. We will warn them once and then we will fine them."

According to Elicker, the city's COVID-19 inspection team has been very proactive in making sure establishments abide by regulations.

The city's Director of Health Maritza Bond said as of Tuesday, 13 businesses have been closed since the reopening of businesses.

Ten have been reopened, she said, but three remain closed.

Between November 7 and 14, Bond said 351 COVID-19 cases have been reported in the city marking a significant increase of cases within the city.
