New Haven Police make arrest in hate, bias incident

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTIC Radio) - New Haven Police make an arrest in hate and bias incident that happened Friday.

Police say a victim reported that around 8:28 a.m. Friday, Nicholus Smith, 29, of New York, aggressively approached a man walking out of the Westville Synagogue on West Prospect Street.

The victim told Police the victim said to him: "What if I throw this hot coffee in your face, you dirty Ashkenazi Jew? I used to beat your kind in New York."

The victim further alleges that Smith lunged at him, so he ran back into the Synagogue.

Officers say they found the suspect in the 1200 block of Whalley Avenue.

Smith is being charged with third-degree intimidation based on bigotry and bias and second-degree breach of peace.

Bond is $10,000.
