New London man charged with hitting state police vehicle

Westbrook, Conn./WTIC Radio - A New London man is facing charges after state police say he struck a trooper's cruiser with his own vehicle Wednesday night.

The trooper was is in the middle of a traffic stop after 8:00 p.m. Wednesday when investigators say Alvaro Portillo, 32, of New London, rear-ended the cruiser.

The vehicle utilized its lights and sirens in pulling over another motorist in the right shoulder of northbound Interstate 95 at exits 65 and 66.

Police say Portillo failed to slow down and subsequently failed several field sobriety tests.

He faces a number of charges including operating under the influence, driving without a license, and following too closely.

Bond was set at $15,000.

The trooper was treated at Middlesex Hospital Shoreline Clinic for minor injuries.
