(Southington, Conn. WTIC)-An ammonia leak caused a near four-hour shelter-in-place for residents living within a mile and a half of the Diamond Ice Company on Industrial drive, where the leak occurred.
D-E-E-P blamed a compressor failure within the refrigeration system that caused a relief valve to release the anhydrous ammonia. Some Bristol and Plainville residents were also affected. Nobody sustained injuries.
Resident were notified by reverse 9-1-1 about the leak that was first reported after 8 and terminated it just before midnight. The Fire Department and a spill contractor will remain at the site for the good part of the day for cleanup and remediation.
