Norwalk, Conn./WTIC Radio - Norwalk police are charging a city woman with child abuse.
The suspect is Vilma Martinez, 35, of Taylor Avenue.
According to detectives, the Norwalk police SVU received a referral from the state Department of Children and Families.
This, after staff at a local school identified welts on the back of a six-year-old student, police said.
Police and DCF conducted a joint investigation and a warrant was issued for Martinez's arrest.
She turned herself in Wednesday and was charged with assault and risk of injury to a minor.
Bond was set at $5,000 pending a court hearing for Thursday.
