Branford, Conn./WTIC Radio - A Wallingford man is under arrest after police in Branford said he pulled a knife on a store employee while attempting to leave with items he allegedly tried to shoplift.

Police are charging Joe K Cottes-Lopez, 31, following the incident Saturday night at a Stop and Shop.

Cottes-Lopez was stopped as he attempted to leave with a carriage full of items, police said.

That's when Cottes-Lopez swung the knife in the direction of the employee, according to investigators.

The suspect engaged police in a brief foot pursuit before he was captured.

The knife was found in a wooded area a short distance away, police said.

Cottes-Lopez is charged with robbery, threatening, reckless endangerment, and larceny.
