PURA approves Aquarion Water sale

Connecticut's Public Utilities Regulatory Authority gives the final approval Wednesday so Eversource could sell the Aquarion Water Company.

The $2.4-billion sale, including an additional nearly $4-billion in service debts, was originally shot down on November 19, 2025.

A court order required PURA to revisit their initial decision earlier this year, at which time the regulatory body signaled approval for the plan.

Connecticut Attorney General William Tong, who argues the deal will double water bills and force ratepayers in 62 municipalities across the state to pay the financing on the deal for 40 years, argued against the sale for nearly an hour before PURA last Monday.

The Attorney General tells WTIC he is now working with affected municipalities to see if there's any further action against the sale that could be taken.

Lawmakers in the General Assembly are considering a bill that would require PURA to continue to oversee the water company once sold, although House Bill 5249 hasn't been taken up for a vote in either the House or Senate.
