Hartford, Conn./WTIC Radio - PURA,the Public Utilities Regulatory Authority, has approved $861 million in storm-related costs for Eversource, but rejected the utility's attempts to charge its customers hundreds of millions more in so-called retrospective costs.

State Attorney General William Tong in a statement calls it a victory for ratepayers, saying families shouldn't have to shoulder the amount for interest payments and unapproved costs.

The final approved amount will be further reduced by $91 million that customers already footed the bill for, as well as over $2 million in mutual aid revenue and $100 million in a ratepayer funded credit authorized back in April.

Eversource had sought PURA's okay to recoup over a billion dollars in costs for a series of storms between 2018 and 2023.
