Michael Pantera had just retired from the force Sunday after 24 years on the job.
Hamden police say Pantera was killed Tuesday in a crash in North Branford.
A department statement called Pantera a "compassionate police officer that cared deeply about the Hamden community".
Acting Police Chief Timothy Wydra said Pantera was very proud to serve in the town in which he was raised.
Wydra expressed shock at the loss.
Hamden Mayor Lauren Garrett said Pantera was a member of the police department's community police division and the bicycle patrol, adding that she is ordering flags in town to fly at half staff in his honor.
There's no word yet on funeral arrangements.
