Hartford, Conn.(WTIC Radio)- Pro-choice forces, including Senators Richard Blumenthal and Chris Murphy, implored the Senate to adopt the Freedom to Travel for Health Care Act, protecting the right to cross state lines for abortion care services.
The measure also empowers the U.S. Attorney General to sue those who restrict a person's right to cross state lines to access healthcare.
Blumenthal said the senators are seeking cloture, ending debate and moving the measure forward for a vote.
Senator Murphy said, "Republicans don't think women should be in charge of their own lives." Advocates said they fear Republicans will push for a national abortion ban.
But Peter Wolfgang, President of the Family Institute of Connecticut Action, said the bill is "based on fear and lies. No state has the right to prohibit travel. The real intent of the bill is to stir up pro-abortion hysteria and to promote an abortion tourism by businesses to states like Connecticut. This bill deserves to fail."
