Fairfield, Conn./WTIC Radio - A state Department of Transportation maintenance worker is dead after being struck Friday while working on a highway in Fairfield.
Elvin Hernandez, 60, was killed while he worked along Interstate 95.
The crash occurred late Friday morning southbound near exit 20.
The highway was closed for hours, as were a number of on ramps to the highway.
According to Governor Lamont, Hernandez worked the for the DOT since 2010, based at the Stratford garage.
Lamont said "I am imploring every single driver to show CTDOT and all other road maintenance workers and first responders respect and slow down whenever you see them working on our roads."
“We are heartbroken by Elvin Hernandez’s tragic death,” DOT Commissioner Garrett Eucalitto said. “What happened (Friday) on I-95 in Fairfield is a senseless tragedy. Our hearts go out to his family, friends, and everyone who loved them. The tragedy is the nightmare scenario that every CTDOT employee and highway worker fears."
Lamont has ordered flags to half-staff in coordination with the date of Hernandez's funeral, details of which have not been announced as yet. The crash remains under investigation.
