NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTIC Radio) - City and state leaders gathered in New Haven to push for the passage of state legislation that combats street takeovers, illegal dirt bikes, ATVs, and reckless driving.
State lawmakers are considering several bills, including "An Act Concerning Street Takeovers and the Illegal Use of Certain Vehicles" as well as "An Act Authorizing Certain Ordinances Concerning Street Takeovers," which supporters say would better enable municipalities and the state to impose new and stiffer fines and penalties on individuals who take part in and/or organize a street takeover, up to $2,000 fines with driver's license suspension or revocation.
Under the plans, police departments would be able to impound vehicles used in street takeovers, seize illegal dirt bikes and ATVs that have a lien in their vehicle, and destroy impounded dirt bikes and ATVS.
This also builds on the City of New Haven’s ongoing efforts to combat this illegal activity, which Mayor Justin Elicker says has worked.
