EAST HAVEN, Conn. (WTIC Radio) - East Haven Police arrest a man in connection with an attack on a pregnant woman during an attempted carjacking Tuesday.
Police say the suspect, William Rodriguez, 28, of New Haven, attempted to steal a vehicle from a woman at the Dunkin' on Foxon Road around 7:44 p.m. on Tuesday, October 1, 2024.
Rodriguez had been sitting in a vehicle stolen out of New Haven, positioned directly in front of the victim's car. He allegedly entered through the passenger door of the victim's car and and demanded her keys.
When the victim refused, Rodriguez began punching her. The victim managed to escape and ran inside Dunkin Donuts to seek help, according to police.
Two male employees inside rushed outside to confront Rodriguez, who was struggling to operate the victim's vehicle.
They successfully removed him from the car and restrained him on the ground until police arrived.
Upon officer’s arrival, Rodriguez was taken into custody after a brief struggle.
While receiving medical attention from an East Haven Fire Department medic, Rodriguez bit the medic’s hand.
Rodriguez was subsequently transported to Yale New Haven Hospital, where he remained under guard until being transported to the East Haven Police Department for processing.
Rodriguez is charged with second-degree breach of peace, assault on emergency medical personnel, third-degree robbery, second-degree reckless endangerment, assault on a pregnant person, third-degree assault, interfering with an officer, and two counts of larceny of a motor vehicle.
Rodriguez is being held on a $250,000 bond on those above charges.
Rodriguez also had multiple outstanding arrest warrants totaling $475,000.00 and two outstanding warrants from CSP Troop A and Troop I.
