Two car crashes close Avon Mountain

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. (WTIC Radio) - West Hartford Police are investigating a multi-car crash that closed Avon Mountain on Thursday and led to a second crash.

Police say an unlicensed driver, in an uninsured car, headed Eastbound on Route 44 (Avon Mountain) in the area of Albany Avenue and Ferncliff Drive lost control of their vehicle and caused a four car chain-reaction crash around 3:10 p.m. Thursday.


Witnesses reported that an eastbound vehicle being operated erratically.

One person in a car, struck nearly head on, underwent surgery for serious injuries to the lower part of their body. Another person was hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries.

While responding to this accident, a piece of fire apparatus from the West Hartford Fire Department was involved in a separate motor vehicle crash with a passenger vehicle. This incident occurred at the intersection of Albany Ave. and Mountain Rd. Two occupants of the passenger vehicle were transported to an area hospital for non-life threatening injuries. No firefighters were injured.

A crash closed Avon Mountain on Wednesday, almost in the same area. Police said a medical emergency contributed to that crash.
