Newtown, Conn./WTIC Radio - The state Department of Correction says two of its officers were injured following an attack Tuesday at the Garner Correctional Institution.
Officials say the incident occurred just before 8:30 a.m.
The alleged attacker has been identified as Joe Baltas, 35, of Meriden.
Baltas was being led from one area of the facility to another when the attack occurred, officials said.
One officer sustained a stab wound to the neck and another a wound to the torso.
Both were rushed to an area hospital where they were treated and released.
Baltas was secured and transported to the MacDougall-Walker Correctional Institution’s Restrictive Housing Unit.
“As Commissioner, this is my worst fear - that our brave staff members are attacked and injured,” said Commissioner Angel Quiros. “I rushed to the hospital as soon as I learned of the assault, and thank God, they are all right.”
