HARTFORD,CONN (WTIC Radio)-Two groups are pushing for emergency-certified legislation to pay for no cost school meals at every public school in Connecticut.
The move comes after an end to pandemic funding that allowed for the free meals in the past. That program distributed $30 million to Connecticut.
Leading the latest charge are End Hunger CT and the School Meals 4 All CT.
Those recommending universal school funding said students who are hungry learn less and face chronic diseases and health issues. They also said stress on families can increase depression and other mental health issues.
State Senator Saud Anwar (D-South Windsor), a Doctor, chairs the Public Health Committee. He said discussion are underway with top legislative leadership to provide funding.
