STORRS, Conn. (WTIC Radio) - University of Connecticut trustees have approved the transfer of a former state prison, along with another tract of land, to the state for possible use as a new regional technical high school.

Trustees, Wednesday, approved the transfer of the former Bergin Correctional Institution on Route 44 in Mansfield back to the Office of Policy and Management, along with an adjacent 25 acres owned by the university. The land totals 60 acres.

The tract is being considered as a possible location for a new tech school to replace Windham Tech in Willimantic, according to the university.

If the school never materializes, the land will be returned to UConn. OPM plans to demolish the prison buildings and prepare the land for development immediately, according to officials.

Bergin, formerly Northeast Correctional Institution, closed in 2011. It housed low-level offenders preparing to be released back into society.
