West Hartford, Conn (WTIC Radio) - University of Hartford men's basketball coach John Gallagher has resigned, one day before the team's season opener.

Gallgher says the final shoe dropped when the university chose not to send a trainer to a scrimmage at Dartmouth.

The coach says the university breached its contract where player safety is concerned.

In a statement, the university says Gallagher's accusations have no merit, and that saftey of students is of top priority.

The coach and university have butted heads since regents made the decision last year to drop from Division I to Division III after this season.

Gallagher also accused the school of denying a credit card to the basketball operations director for team meals on the road, which the university has also denied.
