Waterbury, Conn./WTIC Radio - The man who became the face of Waterbury's response to water main breaks in the city last year is out.

A statement out of Waterbury Mayor Paul Pernerewski's office says Water Superintendent Brad Malay has resigned.

The statement says during an investigation into recent water flow issues, it came to light that Malay "had engaged in misconduct during the course of his employment."

It did not elaborate the type of misconduct.

Malay was asked about it during an interview on Wednesday, a which point he tendered his resignation.

Assistant Water Superintendent Chris Savage will run the department on an acting basis during the search for a permanent replacement.

Issues with water flow in fire hydrants hampered firefighters in their efforts to put out a fire on Bennett Avenue earlier this month.

That investigation remains ongoing.
