Lieutenant David Balnis was involved in a crash on Highland Avenue in the wee hours of October 30 last year.
He was booked on charges of operating a motor vehicle under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol, posted bond, and was placed on administrative leave.
Waterbury police say the 55-year-old is now additionally charged carrying a firearm under the influence of intoxicating liquor in relation to the original incident.
Balnis turned himself in Thursday, was booked, and released on $25,000 bond.
He's due back in court February 27.
