Set to wrap up her week on the road by attending Thursday’s presidential nomination acceptance speech by Vice President Kamala Harris, a Connecticut delegate to the Democratic National Convention says there’s a strong consensus around Harris among Democrats in Chicago. There’s also widespread agreement that they’ll have to do a lot more over the next two months to get her elected.
“We are not going to forget that we are the underdogs here,” delegate and mayor of Bloomfield Danielle Wong told WTIC from Chicago. “It’s all about the work, and there’s a long run between now and November. So, while we are all behind (Harris) and delegates are 100 percent in and we are witnessing history, we do know that this is going to be a close race and we can’t take anything for granted.”
Wong promises that delegates will carry their intensity back to Connecticut and apply it not just to the presidential race, but to other close races like the 5th District race for the U.S. House between Democratic Rep. Jahana Hayes and Republican George Logan.
“When Kamala Harris gets to the Oval Office, she’s going to need a House that’s going to work for her,” says Wong.
As for her week in Chicago, Wong says there’s been plenty to keep delegates busy throughout.
“The week has been packed full of amazing events: caucuses for various sub-groups, lunches, gatherings, mini-rallies,” says Wong. “Just positive, inspirational gatherings. The energy is amazing out here.”
As she was waiting for Thursday’s big night starring Harris, Wong said it was former First Lady Michelle Obama who became her favorite speaker of the week so far: “She absolutely was on fire... Super-inspirational quotes that are going to be timeless throughout our generation… She lit the place up!”
