New Haven, Conn./WTIC Radio - One of the participants in a scheme to swindle the city of West Haven out of Covid-19 relief funding has been sentenced.

John Bernardo, 66, was sentenced today to 13 months in prison, followed by three years of supervised release.

Prosecutors say Bernardo, a West Haven housing employee, and Michael DiMassa, a city employee and former Democratic state representative, formed Compass Investment Group, LLC in 2020.

The two conspired to bill West Haven for over $600,000 of the approximately $1.1 million in federal funding allocated to West Haven for pandemic relief from the federal government.

DiMassa has already pleaded guilty to wire fraud and is awaiting sentencing.

Two other co-conspirators are also awaiting sentencing.

Bernardo, who also faces restitution payment of over $58,000, is required to report to prison on May 22.
