Democrat Maryam Khan of Windsor won a special election Tuesday for a seat in the state House. She beat Republican Charles Jackson and petition candidate Lawrence Jaggon. The 5th District (Windsor/Hartford) seat opened when Brandon McGee stepped down to join Gov. Ned Lamont's reelection campaign.
Khan, a special education teacher and member of the Windsor Board of Education, will become the first Muslim member of the House.
Fewer than a thousand voters turned out, according to unofficial results posted by the Secretary of the State's office. Khan received 706 votes to Jackson's 136 and Jaggon's 104.
