Willimantic, Conn./WTIC Radio - A woman is lucky to be alive in Willimantic after her car broke through a fence on Bridge Street and wound up in the Willimantic River below.
This happened Monday evening just after 6:30 p.m.
The city's fire chief Mark Scrivener said the victim was already out of the vehicle by the time first responders arrived.
The owner of a nearby restaurant and several patrons were able to pull the victim out of the car, Scrivener said.
The chief said the car stayed put despite a fairly strong current due the Sunday rains.
He also said the water is still very cold this time of year and there were concerns about hypothermia.
Scrivener said it was likely a mechanical issue with the car that contributed to the crash.
