EAST HADDAM,CONN.(WTIC Radio)-Overnight work on the East Haddam Swing Bridge, carrying Route 82 over the Connecticut River has been extended from January 20th, now finishing February third, according to the Connecticut Department of Transportation.
The work is performed from seven until 6 in the morning. It includes adding new sidewalks and pedestrian crossings on the east and west sides of the bridge which is more than one hundred years old.
After that phase is completed, other staggered work includes adding other equipment and mechanicals, according to spokesman Josh Morgan.
The bridge accommodates more than eleven thousand cars daily and is a major thoroughfare between Old Saybrook and Middletown.
The American Bridge Company of Pittsburgh, which originally built the bridge, is performing the $75 million project.
Morgan said some of the funding comes from the American Rescue Plan.
