An attack involving two pit bulls in Colorado resulted in the death of an 89-year-old woman after she succumbed to her injuries on Monday, according to authorities.

The woman was attacked by the dogs along with her 12-year-old grandson last week in the backyard of a home in Golden, Colorado, located 15 miles from Denver, per the Golden Police Department.

Since the attack, the boy, who was also seriously injured, has since been released from the hospital and is recovering, officials said.

Police became aware of the incident when the grandson was able to break away from the attack and run to a neighbor’s house to seek help.

Officers arrived at the scene and found the child bleeding and a trail of blood leading back to the home where the dogs were still attacking his grandmother in the backyard.

Non-lethal weapons were used to separate the dogs from the woman as first responders awaited back and medical response.

The woman and her grandson have not been identified. They told the police they knew the dogs but did not give any other information.

Police shared that they are still investigating the attack as they work to identify the dogs and determine if they were licensed and vaccinated as Golden requires.

One of the dogs was injured during the attack, and a veterinary hospital performed a euthanization shortly after. The other pit bull was taken to an animal shelter following the evaluation, police shared. However, after the dog’s owner surrendered care to the facility, it was also euthanized.
