U.S. President Joe Biden’s approval rating has slipped to just 33%, according to a Quinnipiac poll released Wednesday. It is down from the 38% reported in a poll released last month.

From April 7 through April 11, 1,412 U.S. adults participated in the most recent poll. Many questions centered around the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine, which began in late February. Russian attacks have targeted civilian areas and even killed children.

Results showed that only 39% of Americans approve of the way Biden has handled the invasion and 48% disapprove.

Most Americans (68%) think the U.S. has a moral responsibility to do more to stop the killing of civilians in Ukraine and 24% do not think the United States has a moral responsibility to do more to stop the killing of civilians there. More Democrats (77%) than Republicans (67%) believe that the U.S. has a moral responsibility to do more to stop the killing of civilians in Ukraine.

Biden Wednesday announced the U.S. would offer another $800 million in weapons, ammunition, and other security assistance to Ukraine, adding to more than $1 billion U.S. aid sent to the country since the invasion began. Additionally, the U.S. and other countries have levied sanctions against Russia.

According to the poll, Americans are divided as to whether sanctions will pressure the Russian Federation and Russian President Vladimir Putin to end the attacks. Less than 49% think they will be very or somewhat effective. Only 9% think they will be very effective and 23% think they will not be effective at all.

Looking forward, just 34% of Americans said they are very confident (9%) or somewhat confident (25%) that Russia will be held accountable for the killing of civilians in Ukraine. Of the 64% who said they were not confident Russia will be held accountable, 33% said they are not so confident and 31% said they were not confident at all.

Outside of the 33% of poll participants who did not approve of Biden’s performance, 54% said they disapproved and 13% did no offer an opinion.

This rating “ties the low that he received in a Quinnipiac University poll on January 12, 2022 when his job approval rating was a negative 33 - 53 percent,” said the university. Overall, 76% of Democrats approved of Biden’s performance, along with 56% of independents and 3% of Republicans.

At the same point in former President Donald Trump’s term back in March 2018, he had a 41% approval rating, according to a Quinnipiac poll.

According to Vox, Democrats did well in several midterm elections in the months after that poll was released. Republicans are likewise expected to do well in the upcoming November elections, considering Biden’s approval rating.
