LANDOVER, MD. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - The Washington Commanders dramatic walk-off win against the Bears is bringing back talk of an old trend involving football and politics.

For years, Washington’s last home game before a presidential election seemed to predict the winner in the race for the White House.

When Washington won, the sitting president’s party stayed in power. When they lost, the challenger’s party took office.

This oddity held up for decades until 2000, but it seems to be hit or miss since then, sometimes even flipping.

While the Commanders’ win might not forecast any election surprises, it’s one of those classic sports quirks that fans love to follow.
