A Florida man was arrested on Tuesday after he allegedly hit several cars with a tire iron and threw a BBQ grill at police officers during what officials are calling a “road rage” incident.

In a press release, the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office shared that deputies received a call about the road rage on Tuesday.

When they first arrived, deputies found the man believed to be behind the disturbance, Raymond Hofmann, armed with a crowbar, and when given commands to drop it, Hofmann responded to the deputies, saying, “You will have to kill me!”

Sheriff Wayne Ivey said that the suspect then threw the crowbar and started to flee on foot from the deputies, something Ivey said was a mistake.

“He apparently did not get the memo, that if you run from Brevard County deputies you are only going to go to jail tired,” Sheriff Wayne Ivey said.

During the chase, Hofmann allegedly threw a chair and BBQ grill at the deputies who were pursuing him. Eventually, he was stopped and taken into custody.

Deputies later learned from witnesses at the scene that Hofmann was allegedly driving a gray Chevy Tahoe, which he parked in the middle of the road, before using it to ram vehicles as drivers attempted to get around him.

Then, Hofmann allegedly got out of his SUV and began striking vehicles with a tire iron as they went through the intersection. In one instance, he broke a driver-side window of a passing truck, the sheriff’s office alleged.

The sheriff’s office also said that Hofmann was armed with a nail gun, which he was also allegedly using to threaten people in the intersection.

Hofmann has since been charged with resisting, aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, and other charges stemming from the “violent attacks on citizens.”
