A viral video shows one of the biggest movie stars of the 90s seeming to live up to the title of the movie that made her famous.
Alicia Silverstone seemed to channel her character from the teen comedy Clueless as she decided to sample an orange berry she picked herself from a London garden – a berry that turned out to be poisonous.
The 47-year-old actress posted the clip of herself eating a Jerusalem cherry on TikTok, leaving many of her 4.3 million followers aghast.
“I’ve discovered something and I can’t figure out what it is, and I need your help,” Silverstone says in the viral clip. “I just bit into it because I was on the street, and we were discussing whether this was a tomato or not. It’s definitely not a tomato because of its leaves. So what the heck is this?”
After holding the berry up for the camera, she adds, “I don’t think you’re supposed to eat this” before asking her followers to help her identify the unknown fruit she ingested.
One commenter identified the item. “OMG NO!! Jerusalem Cherry very poisonous in the Nightshade family. Hope you are ok,” the post read.
Another offered the sage advice, “Girl! berries are either great or freaking poisonous! Don't eat rando bush-things.”
Jerusalem cherries are considered harmful enough that they should be handled only when wearing gloves and certainly not eaten, according to the Royal Horticultural Society. They can cause fever, headaches, increased heart rates, stomach pain, sweating and vomiting as well as allergic itchy reactions on the skin.
