(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- With heavy snow and bitterly cold weather in the forecast, drivers are being urged to prepare their vehicles for challenging conditions.
Danny Rosenbloom is vice president of the Heart Certified Auto Care repair shops in Evanston, Wilmette and Northbrook.
He said it's important to make sure your tires are properly inflated and have adequate traction.
"The biggest one for me is tires," Rosenbloom emphasized. "Tires, especially in winter are crucial."
He also recommends replacing windshield wiper blades that are worn out and making sure the vehicle's engine is protected from extreme temperatures.
"Coolants or Antifreeze is the fluid that goes through your engine and radiator and basically protects it from freezing when it gets super cold out."
Rosenbloom advises to keep a vehicle emergency kit, which should include snacks, water, blankets, a flashlight and other supplies to help drivers stay safe if they get stranded in their vehicle during extreme winter weather.
