Hundreds gathered at the Laura Bush Park which is located on the site of the George W. Bush Presidential Center at Southern Methodist University to mourn the loss of several children who died in catastrophic flooding in Central Texas at Camp Mystic.

Those who gathered all had something in common. They either know a victim or have spent time at the camp.

“Mystic grows exceptional women and it makes them independent,” said one woman who traveled to Dallas from Weatherford with her seventh-grade daughter. “They are confident women who go on around the world to do amazing things.”

Both mother and daughter have attended the camp.

Another former camp goer was a woman who traveled to Dallas from Sherman.
“I was in the flood of ’87, I was on Senior Hill,” she said. “They had to bring us our breakfast by truck because we couldn’t leave. I never felt unsafe, I always felt safe.”

The gathering was organized quickly but successfully as the parking lot serving the Presidential Library was filled to capacity.

Mourners held a prayer vigil in the form of an outdoor service similar to services that are held at Camp Mystic.
