On Sunday, Vice President Kamala Harris called for an “immediate ceasefire” in Gaza for what she called the “immense suffering” of people in the country who “are starving.”
Harris shared her thoughts while discussing a deal that would include the remaining hostages taken by Hamas to be returned to Israel in exchange for the ceasefire.
“Given the immense scale of suffering in Gaza, there must be an immediate ceasefire for at least the next 6 weeks. This is what is currently on the table,” she said while pushing Hamas to accept the proposed deal.
Efforts to install a ceasefire have increased in recent days, with many looking to get a deal done before the holy month of Ramadan starts on March 10.
Harris discussed the ongoing fighting in Gaza, calling the war “devastating” and the situation in the country “inhumane” and “a humanitarian catastrophe.”
“We have seen reports of families eating leaves and animal feed, children dying from malnutrition and dehydration. Too many innocent Palestinians have been killed,” Harris said.
Harris also demanded that the Israeli government do more to allow aid into Gaza, saying there are “no excuses.”
“They must open new border crossings and not impose any unnecessary restrictions on the delivery of aid,” she said. “They must ensure humanitarian convoys are not targeted and restore basic services and order in Gaza so more food, water and fuel can reach those in need.”
