Two siblings are dead after allegedly being shot to death in Bullitt County, Kentucky, by their mother, according to local law enforcement officials.
The Bullitt County Sheriff’s Office provided an update on the incident, noting that it occurred around 11 a.m. on Wednesday morning.
Police were called to a home in Shepherdsville, and when they arrived, they found a 6- and 9-year-old boy who had suffered apparent gunshot wounds.
The boys were both transported to a local hospital, where they were pronounced dead.
“We did all we could,” Col. Alex Payne, chief deputy with the Bullitt County Sheriff’s Office, said at a press conference.
Payne shared that a neighbor had gone into the home and found the boys after finding the mother in distress outside.
Police have arrested 32-year-old Tiffanie Lucas, of Shepherdsville, in connection to the boys’ death, charging her with murdering her two sons.
While speaking to reporters, Payne described the gruesome scene that deputies discovered at the home.
“There were two victims in the bedroom. They were covered in blood and a gun on the bed,” Payne said.
Lucas is currently being held at the Bullitt County Detention Center, Payne shared. WLKY reported that she previously spent a month in jail for a drug possession conviction.
“Whether you think it’s mental illness, just pure evil, a combination of both, it could be substance abuse, any combination thereof. Pick your poison. None of it’s good. The result is horrific,” Payne said.
