The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has issued a recall of the lactose-free dairy milk Lactaid after it was discovered it may contain trace amounts of almonds not listed on the label.
According to the recall notice issued last week, the 96-ounce containers of Lactaid Milk, produced by the Massachusetts-based company HP Hood LLC, have been recalled in 27 states.
The FDA shared a warning to those with an allergy to almonds — or a sensitivity — as consumption of the product could cause serious or life-threatening allergic reactions.
The recalled products were shipped to retailers and wholesalers from Sept. 5 to Sept. 18 in Alabama, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Mississippi, North Carolina, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia, Wisconsin and Wyoming.
The recalled Lactaid Milk comes in plastic containers with the code 51-4109 P2 and specific “best by dates” listed on the FDA’s notice.
The FDA shared that the issue was discovered as a result of “routine maintenance programs,” which found the potential for trace amounts of almonds.
So far, no illnesses have been reported because of the recall.
Those who purchased the recalled products can return them to where they purchased them for a refund or exchange or call Hood Consumer Affairs at 1-800-242-2423.
