A man who stole a small airplane and threatened to fly it into a Walmart store is facing federal charges on top of state ones.
Cory Patterson, 29, was arrested earlier this month after landing in a field, having circled near Tupelo, Mississippi for hours.
Shortly after taking control of the plane, Patterson called 911, saying he was planning to fly into the store, according to the Tupelo Police Department. He then allegedly posted a goodbye message on Facebook.
The Walmart was evacuated while police spoke to Patterson, who worked at the local airport but was not believed to hold a pilot's license.
After roughly five hours, Patterson landed in a field near Ripley, Mississippi and was immediately taken into custody. He was charged with grand larceny and making terroristic threats.
In addition to state charges, federal charges were filed this week, according to the Associated Press. Those charges include destruction of aircraft and threats involving the destruction of aircraft.
Patterson remains in custody.
