Police in Boulder, Colorado are still working on the unsolved murder case of JonBenet Ramsey 25 years later, and believe advances in DNA technology could help solve the mystery.

Ramsey was found dead in a basement room of her family's home on Dec. 26, 1996 at age six. The autopsy revealed that the cause of death was strangulation.

The Boulder Police Department provided an update on the case, saying that they have processed more than 1,500 pieces of evidence related to the murder.

The BDP Major Crimes Unit has received, reviewed or investigated more than 21,016 tips, letters and emails throughout the case. While detectives have traveled to 19 states to interview or speak with more than 1,000 individuals.

Thanks to the advances in DNA technology, multiple suspects have been run through the system to check for matches. Although, no one has ever been charged in the murder.

Patsy and Jon Ramsey, JonBenet's parents, and her brother, Burke, were all cleared as suspects in 2008 after DNA evidence collected from the girl’s clothing matched an unknown male. The parents have insisted that an intruder killed their daughter. Patsy Ramsey died of ovarian cancer at age 49 in 2006.

BDP plans to continue the use of "new technology to enhance the investigation" and is "actively reviewing genetic DNA testing processes to see if those can be applied to this case moving forward."
