In a statement released on his Twitter page, Maldonado-Passage's lawyer John M. Phillips said: "The last few years has taken everything from Joe Exotic- his property, his freedom, his husband sold his clothes, his parents have passed away and now he faces cancer. Please keep Joe in your thoughts and prayers."

Maldonado-Passage became notorious in the Netflix documentary series "Tiger King". He was sentenced to 22 years in a murder-for-hire scheme but in July, a federal appeals court ruled that he should get a shorter sentence.
