(New Haven, Conn./WTIC) - Gary Bimonte, whose grandfather Frank Pepe founded the New Haven-based pizzeria that bore his surname, has died.
A statement posted to the company website calls Bimonte "a wonderful brother, son, uncle, and friend to so many, and he was loved by all of us".
The pizzeria is a fixture in the Elm City's historic Wooster Square district, in addition to several other locations around the state.
Bimonte was co-owner of the business and was featured prominently in TV and radio commercials for Pepe's.
Pepe's New Haven location is closed today in memory of Bimonte.
His grandfather started the business in 1925 after emigrating from Italy.
The family has requested privacy "during this time of grieving".
