The Connecticut Department of Transportation (DOT) is hoping new traffic lights and advanced wiring give traffic a jolt along Berlin Turnkpike through Wethersfield, Newington and Berlin.
During a virtual public hearing on the project Tuesday, traffic engineer Janet Keiser of Pennsylvania-based Gannett-Fleming said the project will replace antiquated lights with the latest technology.
The project will include:
--all-new traffic signals and support poles
--pedestrian signals and push buttons
--upgraded vehicle detection
--new fiber communications
--CCTV cameras
"One of the goals is to improve travel time and reduce delay throughout the corridor and at the individual intersections," said Keiser. There will be no additional lanes added to the highway, and the project is expected to be complete by late 2022.
