(South Windsor, Conn./WTIC) - Local and state police agencies around the nation will be stepping up enforcement this month armed with federal grant money.

The "U DRIVE. U TEXT. U PAY" initiative is more about education on the dangers of distracted driving and awareness than about writing tickets.

Sergeant Mark Cleverdon of the South Windsor Police Department says there will be stepped up patrols throughout the month looking for those talking on their cell phones or otherwise engaging in distracted driving behavior that could lead to a crash.

Those caught using their phone or other electronic device could face a steep fine.

The first offense will run $150.  The second offense means a $200 ticket.

A third and each subsequent distracted driving offense could mean a $500 citation.
