HARTFORD (WTIC News) – He was not on this ballot this time, but in sharing his enthusiasm in the hours after a Democratic sweep of Connecticut’s statewide races, Sen. Richard Blumenthal dropped some news: he expects to run for a fourth term in 2028.

A reporter asked about his future as Blumenthal joined other top state Democrats at the state Capitol to celebrate their emphatically victorious Election Day.

He’ll be 82 years old when the 2028 race comes along, but says he still enjoys the job and his self-imposed break-neck schedule of public events.

“I’m more excited and energized than ever,” says Blumenthal, “and I look forward to fighting and working for the people of Connecticut this term, through 2028, and beyond. I don’t have a formal announcement today, but I look forward to being on the ballot in 2028.”

The former state attorney general was first elected to the U.S. Senate in 2010.

Separately, Blumenthal said he would vote to return Sen. Chuck Schumer of New York to the position of Senate majority leader. Incoming senators Abdul El-Sayed of Michigan and Troy Jackson of Maine are among those who've called on fellow Democrats to move on to a new leader.
