(WWJ) A candidate for Michigan's next governor is changing course.
Announced Monday morning, Lt. Governor Garlin Gilchrist is suspending his gubernatorial campaign and instead launching a run to be secretary of state.
This comes as Gilchrist had been falling behind his opponents in the governor's race, in both fundraising and in early polls.
In a video message shared to social media, Gilchrist talked about his focus for the SOC position.
"As Secretary of State, I will shine a light on dark money, and put the public first," he said. "I will modernize licensing and registration, by providing smarter 21st Century service. I'll protect your privacy, and never allow your identity, voter registration, or license plate data to mined by big tech companies or be surveilled by the Trump administration."
Gilchrist, a Democrat, joins an already crowded campaign for Secretary of State.
Other Democrats in the race include Ingham County Clerk Barb Byrum and Deputy Secretary of State Aghogho Edevbie. On the Republican side, Macomb County Clerk Anthony Forlini and Oakland GOP delegate Monica Yatooma are running.
