Hartford, Conn.WTIC Radio - The voting in the state's Democratic gubernatorial primary had barely ended when incumbent Ned Lamont was declared the winner over challenger, Hamden State Representative Josh Elliott on Tuesday.
At 9:00 p.m., about a third of the the precincts reporting, the race was called for Lamont, who'd garnered nearly double the votes of Elliott.
At his headquarters at the Arch Street Tavern in downtown Hartford, Lamont thanked his supporters and said he looks forward to the race this fall against Republican nominee, state Senator Ryan Fazio.
"We have one thing in mind. Affordability and opportunity for the people of the state of Connecticut," Lamont said.
In his concession speech, Elliott said property taxes have been a burden for home and business owners.
"We have to act. These things don't fix themselves," he said. "There are big problems out there that we aren't addressing.
Lamont commended Elliott for running a "feisty" campaign and raising important issues.
He said he looks forward bringing the party together headed into the fall.
