(Hartford, Conn. WTIC)-Supporters of Senate Bill 1 say its passage is necessary to start the dismantling of racial healthcare inequities in the state.

The measure is intended to equalize comprehensive access to mental, behavioral and physical healthcare in response to the pandemic.

Hartford State Representative Brandon McGee says the effort will continue to "declare racism a public health crisis until the state and the legislature significantly address key sectors that affect our health".

South Windsor State Senator Saud Anwar says data shows minorities suffer higher rates of infant mortalities, prostate and breast cancer and colonoscopies, just to name a few.

The measure calls for hospitals to develop guidelines that reduce racial, ethnic, sexual and cultural disparities.

The measure still requires House and Senate approval.
