NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTIC Radio)—The parents that brought about Ethan's Law in Connecticut are showing support for federal safe gun storage legislation, with Kristin Song set to testify before a U.S. Senate subcommittee on Tuesday.
While at the New Haven Police Department Monday, U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal announced that as Chair of the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution, he will be conducting a hearing on safe firearms storage on Tuesday in an effort to build support for two legislative proposals he introduced.
Among the two is a federal version of Ethan's Law which improves safe firearm storage state statutes. The mother of Ethan Song, the teenager Ethan's Law is named after, will be testifying before the subcommittee.
According to Blumenthal, Kristin Song's testimony will make it impossible for his colleagues in Congress to deny that unsafe gun storage leads to death or injuries among children.
Michael and Kristin Song helped bring Ethan's Law to Connecticut after the shooting death of their son, Ethan Song, in 2018.
"They lived through the unspeakable horror and grief of losing their 15-year-old son Ethan in Guilford as a result of an unsafely stored gun in a neighbor's home. They have turned that grief and tragedy into something positive for the state of Connecticut and, now, for the nation," Blumenthal said.
Michael Song is urging lawmakers to consider making Ethan's Law a federal one, saying that millions of America's children could be at risk when visiting homes with improperly stored firearms.
"Kids around. Lock guns down," he said, "We can make the world a safer place if we all work together."
Blumenthal has also introduced the Safe Gun Storage Act which would direct the Consumer Product Safety Commission to establish safety standards for firearm locks and safes. The Safe Gun Storage Act would work in tandem with Ethan's Law, Blumenthal said.
