(Hartford, Conn. WTIC)-To support marginalized students, Sen Chris Murphy(D-CT) has re-introduced legislation to increase funding for social workers, counselors and psychologists, insisting it will improve educational outcomes.
The bill is called The Counseling Not Criminalization in Schools Act.
It provides five billion dollars nationwide, to hire health professionals, rather than police.
Murphy says the need is great, with data showing a Connecticut Latino students is six more times likely to get arrested at a school with a police officer than one without one.
