NEWTOWN, Conn. (WTIC)—A campaign event with Congresswoman Jahana Hayes fell victim to Zoom bombing Monday night when commenters posted profanity and racial slurs.
The online community meeting with Newtown residents was interrupted several times with racial epithets including the N-word and derogatory music, according to Hayes in a tweet.
Hayes apologized to town residents for enduring the Zoom bombing episode and called on people to vote in November, saying this behavior is being normalized.
Tuesday morning, Democratic State Chair Nancy DiNardo released a statement about the incident.
"Yesterday, a U.S. Senator said the worst thing anyone could call a person is racist.
He’s wrong. This happened last night during a community meeting in CT and it is far, far worse. This horrific attack must be denounced by all. It is beyond time for leadership that unites," DiNardo said.
Hayes posted screenshots of the incident on Twitter. The N-word is shown in the screenshots. Viewer discretion is advised:
Hayes is seeking her second term in Congress.
