(Wallingford, Conn. WTIC)-Incumbent Republican State Representative Craig Fischbein has been declared a winner in a recount for the 90th District, defeating Democratic challenger Jim Jinks by 19 votes. The District includes Cheshire.
The recount was triggered by a tabulating error ."It's unclear why certain numbers didn't make it into the system. Election night I had a runner returning to my home with numbers from the machines and later after reviewing them they didn't add up," he said.
Fischbein said if he didn't use a runner, he's unsure whether the error would have been noticed.
Fischbein wants change when it comes to counting votes. "A campaign should have access to the final numbers before the town clerks transmit them to the Secretary of the State's office." Fischbein said. He plans to submit a measure to make that change.
Fischbein noted that his opponent ran a negative campaign and "outside force spent 20-thousand dollars to defeat me." He also says campaigning this year was more passive because of Covid, with less exposure to large gatherings like fairs and other outdoor outings.
Fischbein Wins Recount, Reelected to 90th House.
